Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) Detection in 20 minutes

VRE resistance test Amplex 1

According to WebMD, whom I credit for this information, Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are a type of bacteria called enterococci that have developed resistance to many antibiotics, especially vancomycin. Enterococci bacteria live in our intestines and on our skin, usually without causing problems. But if they become resistant to antibiotics, they can cause serious infections, especially in people who are ill or weak. These infections can occur anywhere in the body. Some common sites include the intestines, the urinary tract, and wounds.

Amplex Biosystems have just released their VRE detection kit: eazyplex® VRE, which is a 20 minute test based on isothermal PCR. Highlights:

  • 2 min sample pre-treatment
  • NO purification of DNA required
  • Portable device – you can “take the lab to the sample” if you wish
  • Real-Time detection

I used an EazyPlex kit during my training/introduction to Amplex Biosystems’ products in Giessen, Germany. It is very easy to use and so fast – a technician’s dream, in fact.
