RNase A degrades single-stranded RNA at the C and U residues by cleaving the phosphodiester bond between the 5’-ribose of the nucleotide and the phosphate group that is connected to the 3’-ribose of the neighboring pyrimidine.

RNase A (Ribonuclease A) is commonly used in plasmid DNA and genomic DNA purification to remove contaminating RNA from DNA preparation. RNase A is also used in RNase protection assays and RNA sequence analysis.

RNase A is isolated from bovine pancreas and heat treated to inactivate any potential DNAse contamination.
